REV. VIAL NANG DIAMOND JUBULEE 1908-1983
Luke 14:27; I Tim. 1:17; II Tim. 4:8
The Reverend Sia Vial Nang of Tonzang the first ordained native pastor in Zomi Land
Reverend Sia Vial Nang was born 1893 at Tonzang, the Royal City of Pu Kam Hau, the innpipa.Innpipa Pu Hau Cin KHup invited Rev Po Ku’ a pioneer Baptist evangelist stationed at Tedim, to open a Burmese school at Tonzang in 1906. Young Vial Nang, son of mother Zel Ngem and father Thual Neng of the Hau Tual branch of the Ngaihte family, attended Po Ku’s night school, was converted, and baptized by Rev Po Ku at Kongpilui, Tonzang, in 1908.
The Rev Joseph Herbert Cope of the American Baptist Mission, Tedim, put Vial Nang through the Govt. Burmese Primary School, Tedim; the ABM English School, Mandalay; and the ABM Burmese Seminary, Insein, of which last he was a graduate.
Having served in Mesopotamia as a driver with the British armed forces of World War I, he returned home in 1921, married Pi Dah Za Cing, and was ordained to the Baptist ministry. He thus became the first ordained native pastor in Zomi Land.
Since Rev Po Ku went home to Tabaung, Bassein, sometime before November 21, 1923 [vide preface to Tedim La Bu III] and could not return, Vial Nang took over his duties, Likewise, Vial Nang, being the most Senior pastor, took over charge when Rev Dr. Cope died June 11, 1938, and also when Rev Franklin Owen Nelson went on war time home furlough, 1942-46.
He continued in fulltime Christian Service until 1949 when, by popular demand, he became headman of Tonzang, the city that in 1922 fordced him to sttle beside the Kadaang Swamp, dreaded at the time as deadly devils habitat.
Though retired from fulltime Christian service, he never really ceased to serve the Lord; when the Gamngai diocese split, 1957-58, he took care of the faction loyal to the T.B.A.
Pi Dah Za Cing, who bore him two sons, Neng Za Ko (1922-28) and Gin Za En (1923-30) died in 1955, and his second marriage with Pi Don Khaw Man of Tuitum, was performed by Rev Kham kHaw Kai on April 13, 1957.
April 7-10, 1960, his heart’s desire was fulfilled when he, in his farewell public appearance, participated in the ZBC-BA joint celebration of the Cope Golden Jubilee and dedication of the Cope Memorial Church at Tedim and pronounced the benediction.
On April 26,1960 at his quiet Kadaang home, he peacefully breathed his last and passed on to his heavenly reward, and was laid to rest on April 30, 1960 at the Tonzang Baptist Cemetery.
THE TONZANG TOWHSHIP BAPTIST ASSOCIATION, established in 1975, at its eighth annual convention, Feb. 2-6,1983, Tonzang, celebrates the REV VIAL NANG DIAMOND JUBILEE, and erects amonument at Tonzang Baptist Church.
